How to Be Content in the Workplace

Sophie
The workplace can be a very stressful place to be and not a place of happiness at all. Many people cannot wait to clock off and will anxiously look at the clock or their watch to see if it is time to leave work yet. If this scenario describes your experience, do not give up. There are ways to combat your feelings and help you find at least a measure of contentment while you are at work.

Leave Personal problems at home

I know it is tempting to tell your colleagues your personal problems while you are at work, but it actually best to try and avoid this. Discussing personal problems at work is inappropriate, unprofessional and takes away time that should be devoted to the job at hand. You also need to think of how your colleagues will view you if you are constantly offloading your problems onto them. It can be quite hard for them to deal with, especially if they have personal problems of their own. Even if people do listen, can they really be trusted? How do you know that your personal affairs will be kept secret? It can be stressful to work in a place where colleagues spread stories and it can make your work life even harder than it already is. So if you do have any problems, discuss them with a relative or trusted friend outside work hours.

Be industrious

Unhappily employed people are often not very productive in their work because they are too focused on their own problems and issues. But if you take the time to actually apply yourself more to the job, you are more likely to become immersed in it and find that you have a measure of contentment when it is finished. So when you do finish for the day, you will notice that the day went by much quicker and that you can go home knowing you put in an honest day's work.

Teamwork

Happy employees are often those who are able to work effectively as part of a team to accomplish a particular project or task. Do not just consider your own interests, but consider how you can work with others to achieve goals for the company. The end result will speak volumes and your relationship with your colleagues will be much improved. Teamwork does not mean having to become close friends with your colleagues. It means learning to work together and getting along well in the workplace. This will give you a sense of achievement and contentment.

Do not steal or lie

You might be quick to tell your children not to steal and lie, but do you apply your own counsel? Many employees take home with them stationery items such as pens, pencils, notebooks and so on. It may not seem very significant, but this still amounts to stealing, unless of course the employer has given these items away. The same goes for lying. Telling a little white lie may not seem important to you. But could it cost a business deal? How will it look if you are found out? People who engage in stealing and lying in the workplace will not be content. They may well be looking over their shoulder, wondering if they will be receiving their marching papers.

Attitude

If you are normally a very negative person, then there is no reason to assume the workplace will make you any happier. But you can change your attitude if you really want to. Try to think of the benefits of working where you do, rather than the negative aspects. After all, no job is perfect. Think of the sense of satisfaction you get in knowing you are able to provide for yourself and your family. Employment can really enhance a person's sense of self-worth and self-esteem. So if there is really not much that seems too appealing about your job right now, try to find something! If it is a really bad job and your health is suffering as a result of work related stress, then perhaps you would be better off seeking employment elsewhere.

These suggestions can help you to gain a more objective look at the job you do each day. You will not be jumping for joy each and every day. But work is one thing that helps us to keep going, whether we are stay at home parents, freelance workers or work in some other capacity. So rather than dreading Monday morning, look at it as the start of a new week of opportunities.

Gaining contentment at work depends a great deal on a person's attitude. A negative attitude will only breed more negativity, so try to look for the positive aspects of your job
