Credit can be a good thing if used wisely. It often happens that people allow their credit card debt to get out of control. Spending is easy when you don't have to use cash to pay for it. You can simply run to the store, add it to your credit card account and go. When you do this too often, you find yourself with a mounting debt that you can't get a handle on.

Here are some tips to help get your credit card debt under control:

Purchasing

If your credit card debt is out of control, you should stop using it immediately. The best thing to do is to keep only one major credit card. Using that card for emergencies only is the best way to go. If you keep using the card, you may find yourself in bankruptcy court.

Payments

Pay more than the minimum on your bill. The best way to do this is to see what finance charges etc. that are on the bill. Pay those along with your minimum payment. This will allow you to see a huge difference in the debt of your card when you get the next bill. It also helps avoid paying interest on your interest. You will be amazed at how much this small step can make in getting your credit card debt under control.

Pay Off

If there is any possible way to pay the bill off, do it. After you have it paid off, don't use the card for purchases that you could easily make with cash. Once the bill is paid off, you will not accrue anymore of those high fees that are associated with it.

Switch

Pay attention to the interest rate that you are being charged. These rates can fluctuate greatly. If you see that you are being charged a great deal more than what you thought, it may be time to switch to another card. Most credit card companies will allow you to move balances from old cards to their card at a lower interest rate to get your business. Take advantage of these situations to keep the payments lower.

Late Fees

It is important to pay your bills on time. There are times that you may find that you are a little behind and think that it's okay to let it go for a bit longer due to the grace period. Do not do this. It is a bad practice and leaves far too many chances for the late fees to be accrued. Paying your bills as they come in is the best way to avoid these fees. The fees can be quite substantial and they are a complete waste of your money.

Call

If you are normally on time with your payments but have fallen into a situation that made your payment late, calling the credit card company can result in the removal of late fees. It is worth a try. Some fees can go as high as $35.00. That is more than many of the minimum payments themselves. Five minutes on the phone can save you that much money.

Your credit report is greatly affected by the way you handle these debts. Keeping your report in good standing allows you to do so much more. Keeping your credit cards in control is the best way to ensure this. Take steps today to get those debts down. Once you have achieved this, keep it that way. Most things that people purchase on credit cards come from an instant gratification society. There is nothing wrong with saving for what you want.
