Cokes are for Kids.
Your over 40 body is trying to tell you something - you're not a kid anymore. And that means you have to cut out drinks with a lot of sugar - soft drinks are the big culprit here. 10 teaspoons of sugar in just one 12 oz. can of coke. Other soft drinks are even worse. Let's get serious here - you wouldn't sit down and shovel 10 teaspoons of sugar in your mouth, so why are drinking that stuff anyway? Cut it out, get rid of it.
All the Time is a Good Time for Protein.
More protein at every meal and snack means you'll feel fuller longer, and that means less overall urges to snack. Folks who eat more protein have an easier time losing weight and keeping it off, too. Good protein foods are tuna, chicken, turkey, and cottage cheese. Bad choices are a triple meat cheeseburger with all the trimmings. You get the idea. Lean protein good, fatty protein bad.
Serve up Some Soup.
This is a great idea for every meal - serve some soup before the meal. Good low fat, low sodium varieies are good. Just don't serve the creamy soups like cream of chicken, cream of mushroom, etc. Your stomach will feel fuller and more satisfied with the broth and you won't eat as much when the main course is served.
Drink Your Vegetables.
V8 or other vegetable juice drinks will help control calories by satisfying that appetite. Some reports state that those who drink at least one 8 oz. serving of vegetable juice per day were more than four times as likely to lose weight. It's like your mom told you - veggies are good for you, even in those veggie drinks.
Control Serving Size, Control Weight.
If you haven't noticed, the portion size of foods served at restaurants has just gotten out of control. When you eat out, order an extra plate and split the food with your lunch or dinner partner. At home, serve from the stove and avoid placing all the prepared food on the table where it's just asking to be eaten. If you cook at home, try cutting the recipes in half.
A Glass of Water a Day Keeps the Hungry Away.
It's such a simple step but so effective. Simply drink a full glass of water before each meal, preferably about 10-20 minutes before your meal. The water will make you feel fuller and you will eat less. A simple way to control weight after 40.
* Be sure to check with your doctor or nutritionist if you have any questions concerning weight loss techniques or diets.
* Try and keep your calories down to 1600 per day
