How to Convert a Chlorine Pool into a Saltwater Pool

Bethany Greenleaf
There are lots of benefits to changing a chlorine pool over to a saltwater pool and it is easy enough to do by your self. You will not have to add so many chemicals and there is actually less work to do to maintain a saltwater pool. Almost all chlorine generators (an essential piece of equipment) can clean themselves which will save you a lot of time and effort. The saltwater pool has been in use for a long time all around the world because of its lower cost to maintain and the fact that you don't need so many chemicals.

One thing to remember is that you can't just add a bunch of salt to your pool and stop adding chlorine and everything will be fine. You will first want to get you hands on a chlorine generator. Saltwater pools don't run without chlorine, they just convert the salt into chlorine when needed so you never have to add chlorine. This essential piece of equipment can be added in the line that returns the water to the pool and needs to be the last thing that the water goes through before returning to the pool. There are various gauges and sensors in the generator that will help maintain the PH and chemicals needed to have a clean pool.

When connecting the generator to your existing setup you need to be sure that all the pipes you had to cut into are sealed tightly and you also need to be sure that the generators electrical lines are connected to the pump or pumps lines so that they will run at the same time and more importantly, turn off at the same time. You don't want water to be sitting still in the chlorine generator saturating with chlorine.

There is a chemical process that occurs when the salt water passes through the chlorine generator where salt gets turned into chlorine to keep your saltwater pool as clean as possible. The best part in the process is that after the chlorine does its job, another chemical reaction occurs where it turns back into salt so that the process can run in a cycle and you don't have to continually add salt to your saltwater pool!

That is all you really need to know about setting up your saltwater pool. You will have less to do, because you wont have to monitor the PH and chemical levels in your pool since the gauges on the chlorine generator will do that, you should just test the salt level every few weeks with salt test strips. Also the generator will clean itself! So you will have much less work to do than you had with the traditional chlorine pool.
