How to Convert a Gasoline Powered Car to Natural Gas

Using Natural Gas for Fuel Instead of Gasoline

There are several reasons why people want to convert their gasoline cars to natural gas. One of the most popular reasons is because natural gas is a cleaner burning fuel than gasoline. Another reason is that natural gas is not as expensive and a third reason is that natural gas is a product from the United State, not overseas. Converting a vehicle takes a bit or research and planning, but once it is done, the benefits to the environment and the wallet will be worth it.

Before you make the decision to do a conversion, there are several things you need to do. It's very important to do some research and read sufficient information to determine if your vehicle can be converted to natural gas, because not all vehicles can undergo the process. Check with an organization such as the US Department of Energy (http://www.afdc.energy.gov/afdc/) to find out more about conversion. Then evaluate if the expense is worth it. If you have a car that's old or not running well, it may not be worth converting. Why spend hundreds or even thousands of dollars if the car is worn out?

While doing the research, check all of the regulations from the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) so you have a complete understanding of the requirements of natural gas conversion. Another place to check with is the California Air Resources Board (CARB) for state requirements if you live in California. Make sure that you only purchase conversion systems that are certified by EPA and CARB.

When it's time to get the conversion done, hire only certified technicians to perform the work on your car if you are not a certified technician yourself. This will prevent future issues with regulations or permitting since un-certified technicians will not be recognized and may in fact do the conversion incorrectly. All gas cylinders have to be certified so they are safe when placed in your vehicle.

Probably one of the most important things to consider is making sure you can refuel your newly converted vehicle with natural gas since there are limited refueling stations throughout the country and they might not be located in a convenient area to you. Look on the website of the US Department of Energy Alternative Fuels for natural gas refueling station locations (www.eere.energy.gov/afdc/fuels/natural_gas_stations.html).

Once you decide to go ahead with the conversion, make sure you budget enough money for the conversion because the process can cost anywhere from several hundred to more than $20,000, depending on the technician and the vehicle.
