How to Convert MPEG-TS Videos to ISO and Burn to DVD

Blair Mathis
Though there are many programs that can convert DVDs to video files, it is more difficult to go the other direction-from video file to DVD. The hardest video file to get on a DVD is an MPEG-TS, also called an MPEG Transport Stream, which is the file you fill get when using software to capture a cable signal, or from the PVR software program and TV tuner card.

To burn an MPEG-TS video file to a DVD that any DVD player can play, you will need to first convert it to an ISO. Unfortunately, few software programs available can do this, making it difficult to find adequate tutorials. With the right programs, however, it is easy to convert an MPEG transport stream to a DVD.

Note: this tutorial only applies to Windows XP or higher. Unfortunately, I have no found a reliable method for doing this on Mac OS X or Linux.

Step 1

Download a free program called DVD Flick. Install it to your Windows PC, then launch it.

Step 2

At the bottom of the program, click the BROWSE button and choose a folder to save the finished ISO. Do not choose a folder that has anything in it, as the program will save over everything in the file. Once you've chosen a saving location, click "Add Title" in the upper right corner. Choose the MPEG-TS file you want to convert. It may take several minutes for it to import depending on big the file size is.

Step 3

Click 'Edit Title' and choose a name for the DVD that you're going to create, as well as choosing whether or not you want there to be chapters. Click the ACCEPT button when finished, and then choose 'Project Settings' at the top of the program. Under the GENERAL tab, you can choose what size disc you want to make the disc for-choose DVD 4.3 for a normal DVD, or choose a smaller size if you're using a CD. Under 'VIDEO' choose NTSC or PAL depending on the region of the player you're using. Finally, choose BURN and select the checkbox next to CREATE ISO.

Click 'Create DVD' when you're ready to make the video.

Step 4

A dialog box will appear showing you each process of conversion. The entire process will take about two hours. Once finished, the program will launch a burning program for you to burn the files to a DVD. If you're not ready to burn to DVD, just click cancel and the file will be saved instead. If you do want to burn, put a blank DVD in your computer's DVD burner and click 'START'.

NOTE: if you don't have a default DVD burner (software) installed, download and install IMGburn.
