How to Cook a Trash Can Turkey for Thanksgiving

Karen Barnes
Today I was watching a video from KSN News about a Lemon Chicken Injected Trash Can Turkey. The headline alone caught my attention when the news posted a link on their Facebook page.

A group called the Southern Kansas Dutch Oven Wranglers showed how they cook their turkey using a galvanized trash can outside. Before you get upset about the chemicals and stuff on the trash can, they do tell the viewers to burn the stuff off the trash can before using it for cooking the turkey.

The two men go on to share their lemon injection for the turkey, how to set up the whole cooking process, and KSN News has put the recipe and all the instructions up on their website which you can find on the link above. Now that I have shared the basis of the story behind the trash can turkey, this may be something to try for roasting a turkey this Thanksgiving.

What is Dutch oven cooking?

From the method the gentlemen used, it uses the same cooking method as using coals to cook food in a cast iron Dutch oven.

The heat from the charcoal, in the case of the recipes and Dutch Oven cooking for this the turkey recipe at the beginning of the article, heats up the trash can to create an oven affect for baking and roasting. If you have ever watched Paul Deen on the Food Network, you will have seen her using the methods the cowboys used while driving cattle to cook their meals. This is what these gentlemen do with their group.

Back before charcoal was invented, coals from the campfire or fireplace were placed on top and around the bottom of the Dutch ovens or large cast iron skillets with lids that had lips. This method of cooking was used when people didn't have a cast iron stove to use for even cooking and browning of breads and meats.

Very few people know how to use this type of cooking. It can be very hand if there is a power outage when you are unable to use your electric stove or other small appliances.

Does Barbara Baan have other recipes from outdoor Dutch oven groups?

The two cooks were from Heartland of the Prairie Dutch Oven Society and the Southern Kansas Dutch Oven Wranglers worked together to bring the following recipe to viewers of KSN. If you are wanting to cook vegetables and a pork loin outside Dutch oven style cooking, there is this recipe and video for Triple Pork Delight.
