How to Cook Using the George Foreman Grill

The George Foreman Grill Rocks!

Thomas Griffin
As one who has used a George Foreman Grill for the past 2 years, I am very pleased with the results I get. However, I did not really know how to use my George Foreman Grill effectively when I first got it. Hopefully I can share a few ideas with you to help you get the best cooking experience with it!

How to Cook with the George Foreman Grill Step 1: Dethaw your foods!
The grill works the best when you thaw out your meats and other foods that you will use. While you can place already frozen foods on the grill, I have found that the grill will burn the top and bottom portions of the food before it cooks all the way through. So your best bet is to go ahead and thaw out all your food ahead of time in order to get the best results when cooking with the George Foreman Grill.

How to Cook with the George Foreman Grill Step 2: Mash and compact your meats!
When I first began to cook with my George Foreman Grill, I realized that every time I cooked a hamburger or a turkey burger my meat would get stuck to either the top or bottom of the grill and separate my burger. Thanks to my roommate, he showed me (and I couldn't believe how easy of a fix it was) that all I needed to do was mash my meat together heartily before I placed it on the grill. So, before you put your burger on the grill, be sure to mash together your meat very well. This ensures that the burger will stay in one piece when cooking and it will lock in the juices of the meat!

How to Cook with the George Foreman Grill Step 3: Flip and rotate your foods often!
Whether you are cooking burgers, chicken or stir fry on your grill, be sure to flip and rotate your foods often. I flip my food every 1-2 minutes and rotate it 90 degrees on each flip. This gives the food the real grill look and keeps the food from burning in a particular area. This also ensures that you won't cook the food too long because you will always be checking up on it. I find that my usual meal from the George Foreman takes 5-10 minutes to cook, so it really isn't a burden to check on it every other minute.

How to Cook with the George Foreman Grill Step 4: Clean it as soon as you are done!
Oh how I wished I would have known this when I first got my grill! Do not wait until the next day to clean your grill, or even after supper! Clean your George Foreman Grill as soon as the food comes off the hotplates. I take a couple of paper towels, wet them lightly, and quickly clean off the grill while the plates are still hot. Food particles come off the grill much easier and quicker when they are hot - and it literally takes 30 seconds to a minute (unless you wait, then it will take at least 5 minutes to clean it up).

I hope this guide is helpful to all you George Foreman lovers out there! Best of luck on learning how to cook with your George Foreman Grill!

The quick cleaning is a very good idea. I've seen short-order cooks clean grills by using a scraper/brush and some water to clean it right away. That's definitely the time to do it.

I got mine about 4 weeks ago, so far have only cooked steaks.

Cool tips! Now I can try making a burger again. I don't like burnt on the outside burgers a certain way and I was getting frustrated about. We had pretty much relegated the GFG to pastrami paninis (they are pretty good too though)
