How to Coordinate VA Disability Benefits and Social Security

Phantom Rose

If you are a disabled veteran, then you might be eligible to receive VA disability benefits as well as social security benefits. You might receive VA compensation or pension as well as social security disability or general social security for reaching the age of 65. You can only receive up to a certain limit set by law though. Your maximum limit can be made up of a combination of the two but you cannot receive the full limit on both of them apiece. Therefore, if you want to receive both VA disability benefits and social security benefits, you have to coordinate the two.

Step 1

Apply for either VA disability benefits or social security ones first. Wait for a decision regarding your claim.

Step 2

Apply for the other administration's disability once you're awarded the first one. Be sure to list the benefits that you currently receive on your application to the other administration so they can calculate what you can legally be awarded by the limit set by law.

Step 3

Wait for a decision regarding your claim for the other administration.

Tips

If you are applying for social security benefits after already receiving VA disability benefits, obtain copies of your VA medical records to submit to the social security administration.

Warnings

If you attempt to falsify an application to collect more benefits than you are entitled to, any money you collect must be returned and you could be prosecuted.
