How to Cope with Being a Step Parent

Adjusting to life as a step parent can be a difficult thing to do. It can be hard for your new step child to warm up to you. Here are some tips on how to parent your step child:

Know your place- as a step parent you need to understand that your step child has a mother and father and you are the step father or mother. If you try to be to replace your child's parent then you will never have a good relationship with your step child. Your step child needs to know that you are not trying to take their parent's place. You should be an authority figure, but all of the parenting decisions should be handled by the child's biological parents. You should give your opinion if asked, but respect the fact that your step child should be parented by his or her parents.

Give your step child time- do not pressure your step child into liking you. It takes time for a child to adjust to having another authority figure in their life.

Start by trying to establish a friendship with your step child- start by trying to be a friend to your step child. You should try and bond with them by taking interest in one of their hobbies or finding something fun that you can do together.

Talk to your spouse- ask your spouse about what they think about the situation. They can give you tips on how to connect with their child.

Keep the lines of communication open- talk to your step child. You need to become in their life. You are a new role model in your step child's life; this is a very serious responsibility. Your step child needs to be able to trust you. You need to show them that you care about them and that you want to be a part of their life. You should ask your step child about their day, and tell them that they should talk to you if anything is bothering them.

Attend important events in your step child's life- you should attend your child's sporting events, school plays, school functions, recitals, and other important events in their life. This shows that you care about them and that you support them in their endeavors.

It is difficult to be a step parent; you do not really know your place in your step child's life. You need to understand that your step child is just as confused as you are. You need to reassure the child that you are not taking their parent's place; a child can never have too much love in their life. Hopefully, you and your step child can establish a strong bond and relationship.

IT IS NOT EASY BEING A STEP-PARENT.I KNOW THERE IS ALL THESE STUDIES ABOUT IT ALL BUT,YOU DON'T KNOW WHAT IT IS TRULY LIKE TILL YOU LIVE IT.
YES,YOU CAN TRY TO BE A FRIEND TO YOUR STEPCHILD BUT,WHEN THERE IS A BIOLOGICAL MOTHER THAT DOES EVERYTHING SHE CAN TO CAUSE,TROUBLE FOR YOU THEN IT MAKES ALL WORSE ON THE STEPPARENT.
