How to Cope with Being Unemployed During the Holidays

Lauren Romano
The holidays can be a stressful time for anyone, but can it especially be so for those that are unemployed. Between attending holiday parties, cooking and buying gifts on top of the rising cost of bills it can seem a bit overwhelming. If you're unemployed, there are ways that you can cope to get through the holidays and still have a wonderful time celebrating.

Don't be afraid to turn down an invite to a holiday party or outing

While you may want to attend every holiday party and outing that you get invited to, it may not be possible. If attending a holiday party, you're going to have to bring a hostess gift and the prices for holiday outings can be quite expensive depending on what they involve. Just because you can't attend, doesn't mean that you're going to be disliked or looked down upon. Explain your circumstances to the inviter, or if you're not comfortable doing so, just say that there are personal things that you need to deal with on that day. You should never feel obligated to accept every invitation that you receive.

Find inexpensive holiday events to attend

Around the holidays, many towns offer free holiday concerts and tree lightings along with plenty of other things to do. Many other events, if they're not free, are incredibly cheap. Do a search through your town's website or read the newspaper to find events that you can go to that won't empty your wallet. You can still enjoy a lot of what the season has to offer without spending a lot of money.

Homemade presents can be great gifts to give for the holidays

Whether giving a basket full of baked goods or making a memory scrapbook, anything personally made can be the most thoughtful present to give. Even if you're not the most talented crafter or baker, there are plenty of directions on the internet that anyone can follow to learn how to do whatever it is that they want to do.

Look for discounts on gifts for the holidays

No one should have to pay full price for an item and especially shouldn't if you're unemployed and money is tight. Before just ordering an item from a website or buying it in the store, do your research. Compare prices, haggle, look for coupons and coupon codes and look on auction sites. You would be surprised how easy it is to pay little money for an item.

Talk about how you're feeling to a trusted loved one

When you're unemployed and tight on money, you may be inclined to feel a bit down. Instead of keeping it all inside, talk to someone close to you. The other person can help you to feel inspired and getting the feelings off your chest should help you to feel better.

While being unemployed can be difficult, especially around the holidays, it is possible to thoroughly enjoy the season. Stay positive, take things day by day and take pleasure in the holidays as much as possible.

One unemployed year, I did all my Christmas shopping at flea markets. I got wonderful things, like ceramic lighted Christmas trees, Lenox ornaments, vintage candle holders, and even some really pretty homemade scarves and gloves. Everyone told me they were the best presents I ever gave them!
