How to Cope with Depression Stigma

Shawna Smith
Psychological problems are very common. They are probably as common as viral fever; the only thing is that they are underreported. Such problems take their origin from the society we live in. A psychological problem may have its basis in the childhood. Most of the people across the world experience this problem once in their lifetime. It may be due to a bad childhood or a marital discord. Constant worry at work, financial problems and losing near ones are also a major reason behind these problems. Almost 20 million people in USA are affected by several forms of psychological problems.

The biggest problem such patients face is from the society itself. There's a stigma attached with these mental diseases. People look down at such patients. Psychological problems like depression, anxiety etc. are diseases in the real sense. They have their own causes and they can be very well treated or cured. You will never look down upon a patient, who is suffering from diabetes, heart disease or for that matter any other aliment. The society has a different view of looking at a patient who is suffering from depression. They won't support him; rather stay away from him, which is very sad. This indifferent behavior is due to lack of awareness. People don't know what leads to such diseases and hence they don't care much about anxiety sufferers.

Everyone wants to be happy. No one likes to look gloomy and sad all the day. So it's not your fault if you are suffering from depression. There were certain unfavorable circumstances which lead to anxiety and depression and you just cannot blame the sufferer for that. Do you blame yourself when you develop an allergy against something? Definitely not! So why to blame people who are suffering from psychological problems for their poor condition? They are definitely not responsible for this. Depression is medical problem and it can be very well treated like any other disease. People need to understand this!

Many people believe that once you suffer from anxiety and depression, you will have it for the rest of your life. This is a myth. There's a definite reason behind this medical condition and once that reason is found out, it can be very well treated. So in case you have depression, never think that you will remain like this for the rest of your life. But if you really want to get well, you have to consult the doctor. There's nothing to be guilty about it. It's not your fault if you are suffering from depression.

It is said that tough times make you stronger. Don't give up in case you are suffering from some physiological problem. Take it as a challenge and emerge out from it as a stronger person. Face the reality, do not run away from it for running away won't solve any problem. Try to find out positives from every little thing you can. Indeed it's not easy to be strong when you are suffering from depression or other such problems but if you have the zeal to get well, you need to be strong. There are no two ways about it. Nothing is impossible in this world and you can surely overcome depression using your willpower and determination. Use this problem as a learning experience in life. That way you will definitely gain something out of it even if it's a psychological problem.
