How to Cope When Faiths Are Different: A Guide to Combining Traditions

Laura Seeber
One of the most enjoyable things about living in the United States is that each individual has the right to choose their own faith or religion to enrich their lives. In fact, it is perfectly acceptable to not choose any religion at all. It's this freedom and responsibility of choice that has formed the backbone to our society.

Invariably, though, this choice can bring about contention and conflict. For many families today, there are individuals within the group that have chosen to adhere to different religious beliefs. If you're part of a situation such as this, navigating this potentially volatile situation, finding ways to maintain the peace while keeping true to individual beliefs can be a challenge indeed. Here are a few tips and tricks to make sure that the hearth and home remains welcoming to all family members.

Tip # 1: Keep Open the Lines of Communication

There is an old idea that says that religion should not be discussed in polite company. No doubt this little gem of advice was uttered to keep from offending people. However, if your family has to deal with other religious faiths on a regular basis, polite silence is not only deafening, it can also lead to a lot of hurt and misunderstanding. While it might lead to occasional squabbles or skirmishes, it is my belief that each family with more than one religion should keep an open and constant dialogue concerning their beliefs, celebrations, even their ethical values. Also make sure that there is an open, respectful and honest discussion as to the foundations of the beliefs. By allowing the free flow of information, there is a better chance of a mutual understanding.

Tip # 2: Show Respect Even When You Disagree

Sooner or later, even if you can keep all the communication channels open, there will be times when you and other family members will have disagreements. How you handle these parting of the minds can go a long way to making sure your hearts aren't damaged in the process. Remember that a person's religion or faith can be one of the most important and precious things that person possesses. Because of this, the person, and their opinions should be treated with the utmost care and respect. Even if you consider their viewpoints wrong and abhorrent, remember that to the other person it is a fundamental truth of what they believe. In order to maintain the peace, all parties must be willing to accept that their will be times when the truth will be different for each person.

Tip # 3: Don't Forget the Similarities

While many religions have major differences in how they approach life, the human experience alone allows for a number of similarities between various religions. While respecting the differences is important, remember that the common ground is where the most stable foundations of a family can be laid. Almost all religions teach that people should be treated with tolerance and respect, that life is sacred, and that care should be provided to both the elderly and young. In addition, the idea of a better afterlife and justice is prevalent in almost all religions.

In the end, families can blend together different faiths, but it does take effort. By keeping the lines of communication open, and realizing the importance of compromise, blending different faiths in a family is possible.
