How to Cope with Fatigue During Menstruation

Sophie Spyrou

Menstruation is physically, mentally, and emotionally draining for many women. Each month, the same cycle of pain and fatigue is repeated. Painkillers can help dull the pain of cramps and other physical symptoms, but not feelings of exhaustion. How can you cope with fatigue during menstruation?

Get an Early Night

Get to bed early the night before your period is due. This will give your body the kick-start it needs to cope with fatigue before it takes hold. You will also feel more refreshed, rather than rundown, on the first day of your period when your symptoms are at their worst.

Enjoy a Relaxing Soak

Do you normally start your day off with a quick shower? When you are menstruating, a relaxing bath each day can help dull the pain of cramps and help you cope with fatigue. Play soft music and lay back, close your eyes and let the warm water soothe your body and your senses. A bath can also help you sleep better while you are menstruating if you take one before going to bed.

Put Your Feet Up

Menstruation does not mean you are now an invalid in need of round-the-clock care. However, putting your feet up can help relieve feelings of fatigue and refresh you during your period. When you get home from work put your feet up, even if it is just for 10 minutes before you start dinner. Taking just a few minutes to relax and collect your thoughts can make all the difference.

Many women suffer varying degrees of menstruation-related symptoms each month, from cramps, backache, to fatigue. This can slow women down and prevent them from carrying out their usual tasks and chores. However, some simple adjustments can help women who regularly suffer from fatigue to cope more successfully during that time. Getting an early night can make a huge difference. Start the day before your period is due, for the best results. A relaxing soak in the bath can also help relieve fatigue and leave you feelings more relaxed. If all you can manage is just a few minutes of putting your feet up, go right ahead! You will be glad you did.
