How to Cope With Moving to Your New Country

Chinese Individual's Guide

Moving to a new country can be a very scary thing. You're faced with a language barrier, which makes it exceptionally difficult to communicate and hard to get your message across. Aside from this, you're probably feeling out of place and neglected because of your differences. Know that you aren't alone in this struggle.

The first thing you can do to make a good impression on others is simply by getting yourself out there. No matter how much you feel like hiding or staying "out of the way," this is not the answer. When other people see you as being kind and confident, this will make a good impact on them. If the only thing they've ever encountered with Asians were stories about the Vietnam War, then your smile and the sparkle in your eye might be the first time they've seen the people of your race for who they really are. Just like the natives, you're bound to have a hard time with some people but that's life. If someone is rude to you, don't waste your time wondering whether it's because of your ethnicity. Don't give them your time because they're just not worth it.

It's one thing to know you're not the only one going through it, but it's another thing to feel like you're not the only one. That's why the best thing you can do for yourself is to join one of those meet up groups. Surf the Internet and find one with people who have the same background or similar interests as you, ones you think you can identify with. For example, if you'd like to meet other Chinese immigrants, then use the search engine and look to see if there's a group getting together in your local area. It's a great way to meet other people who are experiencing the same feelings of frustration and loneliness like you.

Finally, use your intelligence and education to your advantage. For example, if you go to college and get a full-time job as an engineer, the people you work with will not be the same shallow-minded individuals you would expect to meet at a part-time minimum wage job.

Moving to a foreign country is not as easy as it sounds. But don't worry because people will learn to love and respect you once they get to know you. And always remember: the best way to make friends is to be proud of who you are and to just be yourself.
