How to Cope with a Poker or Gambling Addiction

Coping with a poker or gambling addiction, whether it is online or in person, can be a very trying experience for the person afflicted with the problem, as well as the friends and family members that are around. Poker and gambling addictions are actually a very common problem throughout society so their really is no need to be ashamed when an addiction is present. There are various steps that can be taken, as an individual and a group, that can help overcome this adversity without having to get counseling. In some cases, though, counseling and group therapy may be the last alternative available and should be started when needed.

Being able to realize that a problem is present is the first step in overcoming a poker or gambling addiction. As with any other type of addiction, once a problem has been seen and admitted to it, it can then be dealt with accordingly. The person that has become addicted to poker or gambling needs to realize that the problem is indeed an addiction, and that they need to take steps to reverse the negative effects that it has had on their lives. The longer that a person denies the existence of a problem, the longer that their lives will be impacted. The only way to fight an addiction is to begin with admitting that it is present and that it has become a problem.

After the first step has been taken and the poker or gambling problem has been admitted to, it is time to begin the healing process. The first steps in this process can be taken by the individual with the addiction, and the final steps can involve the friends and family that are also dealing with the problem.

The second, and probably the most important, step that needs to be taken is to avoid all areas where poker or gambling are present. Whether it is in person gaming or online, avoid them all. "Out of sight, out of mind" is a very common phrase, and when it comes to overcoming an addiction is very true. Also, evaluate the people that are around and decide if any of them promote bad gambling habits. If they do, it is time to find some new friends and stay away from the negative people surrounding the person afflicted.

The next step that needs to be taken when dealing with a poker or gambling addiction is to be open with all finances. A major problem that is associated with an addiction is the fact that finances are hidden from surrounding people so that the money intended for bills can be spent on gambling. To prevent this make paying bills and budgeting money a family event, allowing all people involved to view where the household income is actually going.

These first three steps seem to help people from all over the world overcome their own poker and gambling problems, but there are still a few people that may need even more help. This is when professional counseling and group therapies need to be considered. Most every town will have addiction meetings to help society as a whole, and since gambling is a common addiction, it will be easy to find other people in your area that are also coping with the problems of poker and gambling addictions.
