How to Cope and Be Positive in a Recession & a Declining Job Market

Show Your Boss that You Are Indispensable and Keep Your Job!

Are you worried about the security of your job? Do you have a nagging feeling that you may be the next person to be laid off in an unstable and flailing economy? Are rumors of health and retirement benefits being cut down or even eliminated? Is the whisper of downsizing coursing through the company that you work for? Here are some tips to keep yourself indispensable to your company and lower the chances of your being the next person to be let go.

1. Cheerfully and eagerly offer to take on new projects. From brainstorming cost cutting ideas to volunteering to manage a new project. Offer to pitch in and help in any task that needs help. This will make you feel needed as well as show your higher ups that you are willing to do what it takes to help the company succeed, making you indispensable to them.

2. Refuse to allow yourself to be negative. When you hear co-workers talking about pay cuts and layoff, either change the subject to something positive, or leave the area where the conversation is taking place. Allowing yourself to be drawn in to things such as this at work is allowing yourself to taking on a negative attitude, and this is one thing that you must not give in to. If you have this kind of negative energy at work then your boss will most certainly pick up on it, so avoid it!

3. Set your own goals. Ask your supervisor or manager to meet with you once or twice per week to talk about new goals and a plan of attack on how you are going to meet them. This will surely impress your manager on how dedicated you are to your job and the company that you are working for, and will let them know that you will do anything that you can to help the company to succeed.

4. Invest yourself in your career. Network with people who are in the same business and who may help with sharing ideas with. join come business networking websites such as linkedin.com and even attend some local networking events. This will expand your career horizons and will most likely give you more insight into your chose profession.

5. Do things for relaxation outside of work. Take good care of yourself and be sure to engage in activities that relax you and stimulate your mind other than work related activities. Be sure to include physical exercise in your daily routine, as this is a wonderful reliever of stress. This is a must for not only your own sanity but for your career as well. When you are relaxed, people at work will sense it and you will have a positive energy flow as well as a strong sense of self confidence.
