How to Copy Music from Your IPod to Your Computer

Allison
It's pretty simple to transfer music from your computer to your iPod. Almost everyone who owns an iPod can do that. However, iTunes doesn't let you transfer music from your iPod to your computer's iTunes library. Lots of people buy software that can perform this task, but you don't need software. It's actually pretty simple to do on your own.

NOTE: This process is written for Windows computers. I don't own a Mac, I don't know a lot about Macs, so this process may be different for Macintosh computers.

Step 1: Connect your iPod to your computer. You do not need to open iTunes at this point.

Step 2: Go to "My Computer." This can be done one of two ways: if you have an icon on your desktop that says "My Computer," click on it; if there's no icon, simply click on the Start button in the lower left corner of the screen, and the "My Computer" icon should be on the right, between "Favorites" and "My Network Places."

Step 3: In the "My Computer" window, click on the icon representing your iPod.

Step 4: In this next window, you should see three folders: Calendars, Contacts, and Notes. Click on "Tools," and select "Folder Options" from the dropdown menu.

Step 5: Once you've opened the folder options window, click the tab that says "View." In the "Advanced Settings" box, under "hidden files and folders," click the bubble next to the option "show hidden files and folders." Then hit the "Okay" button, located in the bottom of the window.

Step 6: You should now see a fourth, transparent folder entitled iPod_Control. Double click on this folder.

Step 6: In this next window, you should see three transparent folders, including a folder entitled "Music."

If you want to add all the music in your iPod to your iTunes library, simply copy and paste the "Music" folder into your hard drive. Then open iTunes, click on "File," select "add folder to library" from the dropdown menu, find the copied and pasted Music folder, click on it, and hit "OK." This will add all the music to your iTunes library. Once this is done, click on "Advanced," and select "Consolidate Library" from the dropdown menu. This will copy all your music into one folder, and you can delete the copied and pasted Music folder so it doesn't take up room on your hard drive.

If you only want to add a few songs from your iPod, open iTunes, click on "File," and select "add file to library" from the dropdown menu. This will open a window that will allow you to find the file you want to add. Click on your iPod icon, then iPod_Control, then Music, and from there find the song you want to add and click "OK." Do this with all the songs you want to add to your library.

If you want to add a bunch of songs, first create a folder in your hard drive to contain the songs you want to add. Find the songs in your iPod's Music folder, and copy and paste them into the folder you created. Once you have all the songs you want to add, open iTunes, click on "File," select "Add folder to library" in the dropdown menu, find the folder you created, click on it, and hit "OK." Once the songs have been added, click on "Advanced," and select "Consolidate Library" from the dropdown menu. This will copy all your iTunes music into one place. Once this is done, delete the folder you created so it doesn't take up room on your hard drive.

Hopefully this guide will help you copy music from your iPod to your iTunes library easily.
