When I taught preschool and elementary school, I did the corn print craft which both ages of children each found the corn craft to be equally fun. It is especially exciting to do this print for kids in the fall when corn is little bit easier to access.
The corn prints can get a little messy so it is really important to cover the work areas thoroughly and make sure the child is swearing some time of smock to protect their clothing. It may even be a project that you want to consider doing outside on a nice fall day.
The great thing about corn prints for kids is that corn is really easy to find, inexpensive to purchase and sometimes even free if you grow it yourself or in contact with a farmer who is willing to give you corn.
It is great fun to take the child and pick out the corn that will be used for the corn print, that way the child is seeing the full process of the corn going from the stalk to being made into an artistic piece of work.
The materials needed for this corn craft is: corn cobs with the husks removed, acrylic paint, paper for painting on, baking pan, smock, newspaper for covering the work area and corncob holders if the child is uncomfortable with the tactile experience of touching wet paint.
The process of making a corn print for kids is really simple: pour the acrylic paint into the baking pan using one color or mixing colors together is also fun.
Have the child hold on to the corncob and roll the cob gently back and forth into the paint so that the entire cob of corn is covered in paint.
Then have the child roll the corn cob on the piece of paper in variety of directions to make an interesting and creative work of art.
Allow the paper to dry flat and for an extended amount of time so that the paint dries thoroughly.
Corn craft prints for kids are a great project for both the parent and child, it is really easy to put together and inexpensive too. The corn prints that are made from this corn craft typically look really interesting and kids love seeing that they can successfully produce a work of art.
Hanging the corn prints on the refrigerator at home or the walls in school really give a festive fall feel to the atmosphere plus kids love seeing their artwork displayed for public view!
