If you have a dog that has a barking issue then I do not need to tell you how annoying and embarrassing this behavior problem can be. Fortunately, for the vast majority of dogs some simple training or behavior adjustments can quickly reduce or eliminate your dog's barking issue. This article will provide you with a how-to for correcting your dog's barking issue.

The first step in eliminating any behavior issue in an animal is to identify the underlying root cause.

The number one reason for a dog bark excessively is that it is looking for your attention. If you believe that this may be the case try taking your dog aside for some extra playtime throughout the day; you may be surprised at how quickly that undesired excessive barking disappears.

On the same note many dogs are barking to act out due to an undesired environmental change. Have you brought home a new pet or is there someone new living in your household? Did you recently move? Did you start a new job or change your schedule so that you are around less frequently or on a different routine? If any of these sound familiar then it is quite possible that your dog is trying to gain your attention over some issue which makes him or her unhappy. Obviously many of these environmental changes cannot just be reversed but often times you can simply devote some additional attention to your dog in order to let them know that everything will be all right. This can quickly eliminate your dog's barking issue.

Oftentimes excessive barking stems from your dog trying to tell you that you are not being the most responsible pet owner that you can be. Dogs need exercise, love, attention, routine potty breaks and scheduled meal times. If you think you may be neglecting your dog's needs in one of these categories then pick up the ball and be a responsible pet owner. Many times when your dog gets what it needs in order to be happy undesired behavior issues such as barking, will simply fade away.

These are the most common causes of an excessive barking behavioral issue for a dog. If your dog falls under any of these categories then simply take the corrective steps to eliminate the root behavior which is causing the barking problem and the barking itself will be eliminated at the same time.
