How to Correct False Information on Your Credit Report
You Can Repair Your Credit Report, but It'll Take Time and Effort
Correcting information on your credit report is a lot easier said than done. It really is a long drawn out process that will take at least several months for you to fix. But in the long run it will definitely be well worth the effort. There are several things that you need to do before you begin. The first one being the most obvious of course, get your credit report. If you did not know it all credit bureau's are required to give you one free copy of your credit report each year. There are currently three credit reporting agencies, Equifax, Experion, and Tran union. It may seem like a daunting task but this is definitely something that is worth the effort.
When you get your credit report the first thing you need to do is take a look at what your credit score is. Anything below 550 means that it will be very difficult for you to get any type of financing. You should not hire any type of credit repair company. Everything that they claim they can do you can do yourself. It will take the same amount of time as it would if a credit counseling agency did it for you.
The goal is to get yourself a higher FICO score. You can usually do this by removing any negative credit from your reports. There are however some items that can not be removed, such as a bankruptcy. You should also keep in mind that it is possible for them to post the wrong information on your credit report. This is another reason why it is so important for you to make sure you check your credit report on a yearly basis. If you do find some type of error on your credit report. The Fair Credit Reporting Act required that all credit bureaus provide information so that you can correct the mistake. But you are the one who will have to request an investigation. You can now even file a dispute online or by the telephone. Of course there is still the old fashioned way of send it via mail.
Just make sure you have all of your information handy, including what you are disputing. Make sure that you gather all of the information you need to back up your claim that the information is false. Remember you can not just say that the information is false you have to prove it as well. Even if the company says that the information the credit agency has is correct, you can still have your documents filed along with the credit report. This way when anyone checks your credit report they will see that this is an item you still dispute.
