How to Make a Corset

Kristine Brite
Corsets were a wardrobe staple for women for hundreds of years. Today, a woman might go her entire life time without wearing a corset. Some people wear corsets for costumes and also in alternative fashion circles. A corset tightens the waistline and lifts the bust line. Corsets were historically tied in the back, but most now tie in the front. They traditionally contained whale bone, but modern materials can be used in substitution.

Things You'll Need

  • Fabric
  • Corset pattern
  • Straight pins
  • Fabric pencil
  • Sewing machine
  • Eyelets
  • Eyelet hand press
  • Satin ribbon
  • Ruler
  • Six meters steel boning
  • Interfacing
  • Cotton twiil
  • Nylon thread
  • Busk
Step 1

Put the pattern over the fabric and pin in place. Cut the fabric along the pattern. This will create two corset pieces.

Step 2

Fold each end of the fabric back and pin. Sew the edges to make a hem and remove the pins as you go.

Step 3

Mark spots for eyelets one half inch from the edge of the corset. Place the eyelets 1/2 inch from each other. Punch out the eyelet holes with an eyelet hand press. Repeat on the other piece of the corset.

Step 4

Sew the two pieces of corset together in the front, or the edge without the eyelets.

Step 5

Put ribbon through the eyelet holes and pulls on the ribbon to tighten.
