How to Craft a Jar Lid Refrigerator Photo Magnet

Another Fun Craft for Granny and Kids!

Betty Malone
Granny crafts are those fun and silly things that Grandma can pull out and make with the grandkids when they visit. I'm compiling a lot of ideas so that when they come to Grandma's house and can't find anything to do, I'm ready to fight the boredom and restlessness. Making a neat refrigerator photo magnet out of a recycled jar lid is the latest Granny craft I have discovered.

Supplies for Jar Lid Photo Magnet

For those craft you need a jar lid with a bit of overhang, like the kind found on olive jars, jelly jars, etc.

Piece of Styrofoam packaging from fruit or meat trays, washed thoroughly

Magnet type strip (You can buy this in a long strip you cut, or peel off a section or in small pieces ready to glue onto the back of an object)

A photo or picture that will fit inside the jar lid

Acrylic or spray paint

Steps to making your own Jar Lid Photo Magnet

Step one: Paint the jar lid the color of your choice

Step two: Place the jar lid on a piece of the Styrofoam and draw around it. Cut the Styrofoam circle out, just inside the line you drew.

Step three: Lay the foam circle on the front of the photo and center the photo section you want to be seen on your magnet. Trace around the foam and cut out the picture.

Step four: Spread glue on back of picture or photo and apply to the Styrofoam circle. Let dry.

Step five: Wedge the Styrofoam circle with photo or picture on it, into the jar lid. If you want you can place a bit of tacky glue on the back of the circle, but if you've cut it just right, the circle should wedge into the jar lid tightly. You want a tight fit.

Step six: Glue a piece of magnetic strip onto the solid back of the jar lid and your magnet is ready to be displayed on the refrigerator.

You could use favorite photo or make your own drawn design on paper. Be creative!

I think we're going to do a set of primary colors with matching photos inside. Like a red magnet with a red firetruck picture, a blue magnet with a blue dolphin..etc. to teach colors.

These would make nice gifts for grandchildren to make to give as gifts. Simple, easy, cheap and recycling, that's my kind of Granny Craft!
