How to Craft a No Sew Christmas Tree Skirt
Learn to Craft a Christmas Tree Skirt Without Sewing a Single Stitch!
Materials:
72" square of felt fabric (any color)
tailors chalk
1 yard of string
scissors
1⁄4 yard of felt fabric (another color, this is for the appliques)
card stock
pencil
fabric adhesive
2-inch-wide coordinating trim
Directions:
Begin by folding the 72" square of felt fabric in quarters. Tie the string to the tailors chalk and pin the other end of the string to the folded corner of the felt. Make sure to keep the string taut. Now move the chalk to mark a quarter circle along the edge of the felt. Cut along the chalk line, making sure that you cut through all four layers of the felt.
To make the center opening to wrap around the tree base, keep the felt folded and cut the folded corner with a 1" deep quarter circle. Open the felt and cut a straight line from the outer edge of the felt to the center circle to form the no sew Christmas tree skirt.
To make the appliques for your no sew Christmas tree skirt, you need to create a template. Using the card stock you can draw your shapes freehand or use large stencils or large cookie cutters. If using cookie cutters place the cutter onto the card stock and trace the design around the outside of the cookie cutter (to make the appliques a bit larger). After you have drawn out the designs for your appliques onto the card stock, cut out the shapes to make your templates.
Place the templates onto the felt fabric that was chosen for your appliques. Out line the templates with the tailors chalk and cut out your felt appliques. Lay the appliques onto the no sew Christmas tree skirt to determine a pattern or position for each applique. Lift an applique and apply the adhesive glue to the backside, than place the applique back in it's place and press it down onto the tree skirt. Finish gluing the rest of the appliques to the no sew Christmas tree skirt in this manner.
Now run a line of adhesive glue around the edge of the no sew Christmas tree skirt and attach the trim.
Hints: you can use fringe, ruffled trim, beaded trim even a feather boa to line the edge of your no sew Christmas tree skirt. You may also choose to add embellishments to your appliques, like buttons, sequins, gems etc. These can all be attached with fabric glue.
Have a great time crafting your no sew Christmas tree skirt! May your holidays be filled with joy!
