This craft project will teach you how to craft the look, of a beautiful stained glass mirror. Crafting an authentic stained glass mirror is quite difficult and much more expensive, but this craft project will give you very similar results for far less time and money. There is something so magical and sophisticated about stained glass, which probably explains why it has graced castles, mansions and churches throughout the world. Just follow the directions below, to craft a stained glass mirror of your own.

Materials:

A framed mirror, stained glass pattern, colored chalk, pencil, liquid lead, tape, stained glass paints and a paint brush.

Tips:

There are many free patterns available on line and they can also be found in craft books. Another inexpensive option is to purchase a stencil with a pattern that you like. Any mirror will work as long as it is framed. You may use an existing mirror or visit your local thrift stores, discount stores etc. The remaining materials are available at most craft stores.

Directions:

Before you begin crafting your stained glass mirror, cover a flat surface with newspaper or plastic. Make sure that your mirror is clean and dry. Now you need to decide where your pattern is to be placed on your mirror. Do you plan to run a stained glass border around the mirror or are you planning to add the stained glass to the entire mirror. Once you have determined the placement of the pattern, use the colored chalk to outline the design. Now place the pattern face down on the mirror and tape it securely in place. Use the pencil to trace the design of the pattern, pressing down firmly. After the pattern has been traced, gently remove the pattern. You should now have a chalk line of your design on the mirror.

Using the liquid lead, carefully follow the chalk lines until the entire design is lined with the lead. Set the mirror aside until the liquid lead has thoroughly dried.

After the liquid lead has dried, you are ready to add your stained glass paints. Assemble the colors of paint that you plan to use for your design. Now use the paint brush and carefully paint each section with the colors you have chosen. When you apply the paint, make sure to stay within the lines of lead. Allow the paint on your stained glass mirror to dry thoroughly, before hanging.

Hints:

Another great option you might consider, is replacing the mirror with an old framed window. Afterward hang your stained glass window in front of a window, as the sun shines through, your stained glass will be breathtaking!
