How to Make Crafty Bookmarks

Chelsea Hoffman
Bookmarks are necessary accessories for people who love to read, but paper bookmarks tend to wear out and fall apart. Making your own bookmarks at home allows you to make use of a wide range of crafting materials to create long-lasting place-holders.

You can give your homemade bookmarks as thoughtful and price-friendly gifts during any occasion and you can even market them in an Etsy store or blog for people to buy them. Regardless of the use, your homemade crafty bookmarks are enjoyable to create.

Materials
Fabric remnants, card-stock paper, a hot glue gun and assorted embellishments are needed to create a simple and crafty bookmark. You can use denim, linen, silk and virtually any other fabric you please; Especially if you're turning this into an eco-fashion craft, using discarded clothing.

A hot glue gun is used to keep your homemade bookmark in place with embellishments and trimmings. The embellishments you select vary from flat-backed gemstones to fabric paint. Your creativity is the only limit when it comes to these kind of craft projects.

Creation
Select a rectangular strip of card-stock paper measuring about 8 inches long by 3 inches wide. This is a standard size for a bookmark.

Spread out a segment of fabric measuring 16 inches tall by 6 inches wide. Use any fabric you desire.

Squeeze a series of lines across the card-stock segment. Place it sticky side down onto the very center of the fabric segment. Press firmly and release after 20 seconds.

Squeeze a few lines across the exposed surface of the card-stock paper. Fold both sides of the fabric inward to overlap onto the glued surface. Squeeze a line of glue down the center of the fabric covered center.

Overlap the bottom and top folds of fabric over the center and press firmly into the glue. Let the bookmark dry for 20 minutes.

Embellishing
Embellishing the crafty, homemade bookmark lets your creativity take control. You can personalize it by using fabric-paint pens to write your name or the name of the recipient. You can also apply lace bordering around the edges of the bookmark.

This homemade, crafty fabric bookmark is long-lasting and ornate.
