How to Create Architectural Wall Panels

T.R. Humphrey
Give your boring walls a dramatic flair by creating architectural wall panels. The first thing you will need to do is sketch a design. There are many options for number, size, and spacing of panels. Be creative and create your own design. However, keep in mind the dimensions for mirrors, artwork, and other objects to accommodate your needs.

There are a few items you will need to gather before you get started. Some of these materials you will need are:
Painters tape, molding in various sizes and styles, all purpose interior primer, sandpaper, semigloss or eggshell finish paint, carpenters glue, 6d or 8d finishing nails, wood filler, and latex caulk. Some tools you will need for this project are: tape measure, framing square, builder's level, paintbrush, power miter saw or handsaw with miter box, drill with 1/16" and 3/32" drill bits, hammer, and nail set.

Start by painting the walls with a base color that complements the color you have chosen for the trim. When it is completely dry use painters tape to mark the design on the walls. Check that the tape is level and square. Then, mark the outer edges with a pencil and carefully remove the tape. This is where you will be applying your molding.

Make sure you choose moldings that complement the existing woodwork. Calculate the molding materials needed. Select straight pieces to avoid difficulty when installing. Next apply a coat of primer to the trim using all purpose interior latex primer. When the primer is completely dry, sand the trim lightly. Then, apply one or two coats of the finish paint color.

Measure and cut molding using a power miter saw or handsaw. Cut one corner and then check your measurements. Once you have the measurements, then make the other cut. Sand each cut lightly. Drill nail holes, using the drill bit that is slightly smaller in diameter than the nail. Apply carpenters glue to the reverse side of the molding. Secure molding in place with a few partially driven nails. Repeat this process until each section is secure and the design is complete. Anchor molding to the wall with finishing nails using a nail set.

Lastly, fill in holes with wood filler. When wood filler is completely dry, sand over the area lightly. Make sure and fill any gaps, corners, and edges with caulk for a clean completed look. Remember to go back over any areas that need paint. Following these steps will give you architectural wall panels that you can enjoy.
