How to Create an Artistic Stool for Your Home

Marli
Creativity doesn't have to stop at the artwork hanging from your walls, it can radiate though every element of your home. One of the cutest artistic projects for a home can be a small everyday object like a stool. Unfinished wooden stools can be purchased at arts and crafts supply stores and they are usually pretty inexpensive. They usually cost around $14. This is a guide to creating your very own, artistic stool for your home that can be both functional and charming.

Supplies
Of course, to decorate a wooden stool, you have to buy a wooden stool. Try to find an unfinished one; they are usually the easiest to work with. If you can only find painted ones, try to find it in a color you like that way you don't have to paint as much. For this project you'll need some acrylic paints. You can go for either complementary colors for a subtle look or you can go for crazy colors if you want an artistic splash in your home. You will also need a sealer so that your stool will have a water resistant finish. You can go for a glossy finish or a matte finish; it all depends on your taste. You can also use stamps or stencils to decorate your stool. If you're feeling adventurous, try free-hand painting.

The Project
Take your stool and decide where you want your colors to go. You may choose to paint the base one color and the legs another color or just paint the entire stool one solid color. While you are letting the stool dry from the base coat of paint, you can try sketching the design you want to create by means of painting, stamping, or stencilling. Once the stool is dry, you can decorate it however you chose and when you're done, simply spray your clear varnish over the stool. Make sure you spray the entire stool, not just the top. If you will be using your stool in the kitchen, chances are that it will get something spilled on it at one point or another. By spraying the stool with varnish, you ensure that you can simply wipe down your stool with a damp cloth if it gets dirty.

Small touches of artistic appeal throughout your home can add to the overall atmosphere. So stay creative, almost anything can easily be given an artistic touch with just a little thought and time.
