How to Create a Cozy Bedroom

Amy Brantley
If one room in your house should exude comfort, it should be your bedroom. A bedroom should wrap you in a feeling of coziness. A cozy bedroom is also much more romantic. But, how do your create a cozy bedroom? What design elements need to be in place to make a bedroom feel comfortable?

Paint Colors

People are under the misconception that dark paint colors make a room feel small. That couldn't be further from the truth. What dark paint colors can do is make a room feel cozy. These colors can also make the bedroom romantic. Dark red, for example, offers a feeling of passion. Other colors, such as chocolate brown, can make a bedroom feel like a winter ski lodge. Play around with dark colors and sample a few different ones to find the one that's right for you.

Electric Fireplace

Not every region or season can handle a wood burning fireplace. Electric fireplaces offer a cozy feeling, but have the option to not put off heat. This allows you to enjoy the fire without having to crank up the air conditioner. Not to mention, a fireplace in the bedroom can also be romantic. Many electric fireplaces even come with a remote so that you can control the fire from across the room.

Luxurious Bedding

A cozy bedroom needs high end bedding. You don't want to lay down and have knotty sheets against your skin. Six hundred thread count Egyptian cotton sheets can actually be purchased for around $100. This may seem like a splurge, but it's worth the money. Not only do these sheets feel better, but they last longer as well. Another consideration is down or down alternative comforters. Down alternative comforters are not only more affordable, but are essential for those that suffer from allergies. Down and down alternative comforters can be purchased for less than $100.

Accessories

Bedrooms should not be filled with accessories that stimulate the mind. One should enter a bedroom and feel a sense of peace. An electric water fountain, soothing pieces of art and soft lighting are all essentials in a cozy bedroom. You want accessories that encourage a restful night's sleep.

Hi Amy, I've never heard of a fireplace in the bedroom. That is so weird, however very intriguing. I like the part that the bedroom should be a peaceful place. That you shouldn't have anything stimulating like a television or something. Great review.

A fireplace can really spell cozy. Nowadays you can buy them at home improvement stores without the need to break down walls or add chimney flues. I am thinking on saving up to buy one for our bedroom. :)

Good ideas, Amy. I guess I got a good deal when I bought my 600+ thread count sheets from Costco at about $65. (I believe they were 625 thread count but I can't remember for sure.)
