How to Create Decorative Batik Table Linens

Rhetta Akamatsu

Create your own unique, one of a kind table linens which you will be delighted to display at parties, holiday gatherings, or every day for your own enjoyment!

You will need some broken crayons, old muffin tins, and sold color table linens: tablecloths, towels, napkins, or runners. You will also need commercial dye in complementary colors to your linens, such as RIT dye, and a paintbrush.

Start by sorting your broken crayons into the various holes in the muffin tin, according to how many colors you want to use. Then place them in a pan of water and heat them over low heat on the stove until melted. You can also heat them in a microwavable muffin tin in the microwave until melted.

Dip your paintbrush into the melted crayons, and paint on the table linens, either freehand or by drawing a pattern.

Once you have your pattern drawn on the linens, wrinkle them with your hands, crushing the design until the wax cracks.

Now, dip the linens into the prepared commercial dye, following the directions on the package. When the linens are dried, you will have lovely batik designs!

You can use this same technique to create aprons, tree skrits, and even clothing!

Of course, if you are doing this craft with children, carefully supervise the heating of the crayons. They are flammable. This craft is best for older children and adults.
