Rising food prices may have you wondering how you are going to purchase all of your families' favorite meals and snacks. You may be thinking about different strategies to stretch your food dollars. You do not have to sacrifice healthy foods for nutritionally dense foods on sale. Do not become victim to eating unhealthy foods regularly simply because they are on sale. Here are 3 tips to help you stretch your grocery budget.

Decide

What are you currently purchasing? Are the convenience foods that you are purchasing healthy? Have you given a second thought to what really is in them? If you strictly shop the sales for processed foods such as cereal, canned goods, and dry grains stop. Stop purchasing based strictly on what is on sale. Think about the health aspect of what you are purchasing. If you're favorite snacks, and staples are made with white flour or have no fiber you are not saving anything, by eating these foods. The health of your family is more important.

Choose

Make the choice to purchase foods with less sugar, white flour, and more fiber. For example switching your breakfast cereals to high fiber cereals make initially seem like it costs more. However, if paying a dollar more per box prevents everyone from needing a second bowl of cereal, you are saving money. The fiber will help to give you the feeling of being full. There are numerous cereals that do taste good. Fiber one and Frosted Mini wheat's have a great taste and are very high in fiber.

Shop

While shopping become a discriminating label watcher. Take a few moments to read each label before you add it to your basket. You are looking for fiber, calories, sugar, and artificial flavors and colorings. For example when shopping for rice select varieties with fiber, such as brown rice. An unhealthy choice would be to select prepackaged white rice mix that is high in sodium and has no fiber. When label watching becomes a habit, you will be able to shop outside of your families familiar favorites with confidence.

Developing a better strategy when food shopping; is the only way to get different results. You can help yourself and your family to loose weight and become healthier by making different choices. These changes can be used within your current grocery budget. Choosing to eat healthier can prevent many health problems that are directly related to diet. Use these tips when shopping for groceries to become healthier and lighter in the wallet.
