How to Create an Inspirational Writer's Journal

Words Are Creative Building Blocks for a Writer

Writers often read a sentence or paragraph that sticks in their mind and triggers a flood of thoughts and memories. Recording these words into a book can be a helpful tool when writer's block strikes

Is it Plagiarism to Copy Other People's Writing

Using other people's phrases in a piece of writing is classed as plagiarism. Recording them in a private journal to prompt creativity is not. It is a known fact that to write well, a person needs to be a prolific reader. The process of reading skilled writing often prompts a response from the heart.

How to Create an Inspirational Journal

Keep an eye open for sentences or phrases that have emotional impact. They pop up wherever there are written words. Look for them in books, best sellers, newspapers, magazines and advertising billboards.

Choosing a Journal to Record Words In

Stationery stores are full of blank journals with something to suit everyone's taste. Some prefer peaceful and reflective while others go for something more zany and modern. The dreamy romantics go for lace and flowers and the imaginative may settle for fairies and toadstools. Choose something with good quality paper and lined pages.

Write the Words by Hand

Some writers type everything they write. Others prefer to scribble thoughts on paper first. There's definitely something about a raw sheet of paper that begs for a pen and a dash of creativity. Try handwriting phrases and sentences directly into the journal as part of the creative process.

Include Favorite Quotations

Quotations from famous speakers and personalities can be powerful to include in an inspirational journal. Look for quotes on writing, the creative process and inspiration as a starting point. Bible verses are also inspiring as are some messages in greeting cards.

Add to the Journal on a Regular Basis

Keep the journal in an accessible spot and write down phrases and quotations on a regular basis. If away from home, copy the words onto paper and add them in later. It's an ongoing discipline but the rewards are well worth the effort.

Read it for Inspiration

Read the journal from time to time. A page or two may be enough to prompt creativity and it's seldom necessary to read the whole journal. It's like priming a pump so a fresh flow of water can come bursting through.

An inspirational journal is a personal creation. Others might enjoy browsing through it, but the writer will know where the words came from and why they had an impact. It's an invaluable tool that is worth investing time and effort into.
