How to Create a Kitchen Design Plan

Small Kitchens Can Be Luxurious

Step 1

Use a tape measure to find the length, width and height of your kitchen walls. Measure all walls, including indents and walls that stick out. Do this so that the blueprint you design can be accurate as later on the kitchen will be built from it.

Step 2

Make a box on the graph paper using a pencil and a ruler. Use the ruler as a straight edge only. Make each block equal ½ foot. Make a 10 foot long wall to be 20 blocks long on the graph paper, for example. Include all indentations and walls that stick out. Mark where doorways and windows are using 1 small line for each side of the door or window.

Step 3

Look through several issues of several different home and garden magazines to get an idea of what you want your luxury kitchen to include. Consider the width and height of each thing you choose to include, such as the dishwasher, refrigerator, stove, and cabinetry. Find the exact width and height of each thing if possible for the most accurate design plan.

Step 4

Use the pencil to draw the stove and refrigerator on the walls where they will be. Remember that each square equals ½ foot. Draw in the dishwasher. Use small lines and print tiny words to label each item, including measurements.

Step 5

Draw in a pantry, and a closet. Use the rest of the available wall space for countertops, and cabinetry. Plan to make a row of cabinets as long as each counter, having them hung above the counters for ease of access and plenty of storage space. Do this according to the actual length and width the counters and cabinetry will be. Label each item according to what it is and the measurements of it.

Step 6

Draw in a center island for additional countertop and storage space. Include a sink and cutting area for added luxury.
