How to Create a Macro in Microsoft Word 2007

A Step-by-step Tutorial on How to Record and Run Macros

The Armchair Geek
Macros are a convenient way to automate MS Word tasks that you perform over and over again, eliminating the need to manually perform them. A macro is a series of instructions and commands that are grouped into a single command, to execute repetitive tasks easily and efficiently. It can, for example, be used to execute a long series of steps simply by clicking the macro. Read on to learn how to automate tedious, repetitive tasks in Microsoft Office Word 2007.

The process of creating a macro will involve recording a set of keystrokes, which can later be played over again and again to complete a repetitive task. Here's how:

1. Click on the VIEW tab in the menu at the top of the screen.

2. Click on MACROS and then click on RECORD MACRO. This will open the Record Macro window.

3. Type in a name for your macro into the MACRO NAME

box. Make sure it is a meaningful one so that you can easily identify the macro later on.

4. Decide whether to assign the macro to a button on the Quick Access Toolbar or create a keyboard shortcut for it. You may also opt not to use either option.

  • Click the Button icon to assign the macro to a Quick Access Toolbar button or icon
  • Click the Keyboard icon to assign the macro to a keyboard key

5. Go to the STOREMACRO IN

box. Click on the document or template that you want to store the macro in.

6. Type in a brief description of the macro into the DESCRIPTION box.

7. Click the OK button. This will open the WORD OPRTIONS window.

8. Add the macro by selecting it from the left hand column and then clicking on the ADD button.

9. Click on the OK button to start recording the macro. The cursor will change to display a little cassette recorder, indicating that the recording has begun.

10. Perform the series of actions that you want to be recorded into the macro. Once you are done, stop the recording to complete the process. To do this, click on the VIEW Tab, select MACROS and then select STOP RECORDING. And you are done!

11. To run your micro, click on its icon from the Quick Access Toolbar.
