How to Create a Mailing List Using Opera Mail

May Monten
The Opera web browser's built-in email client (called "Opera Mail" or "M2") has great features that you won't find on many other email programs, but it also has some drawbacks. One minor drawback is that the procedure for setting up a mailing list is not intuitively obvious.

If you're an Opera Mail user, and you regularly send mail to the same group of people, it will be worth it to learn how to set up a list. Once it's set up, you can send mail to the entire group with just a few mouse clicks.

1. Open Opera. Start by pressing the F4 key to get the panels on the left. If you see a "Contacts" icon, click on it, and click "OK." (If there is no "Contacts" icon, then right-click on the panel, select "Customize," select "Panels," and then check "Contacts" and click "OK." )

2. Right-click in the lower portion of the panel, and select "New Folder" from the menu. Type in a name for your folder, and hit Enter.

3. Add email addresses to the folder either by dragging and dropping existing contacts into the folder, or by right-clicking on the folder, selecting "New Contact," entering a name and address in the Properties box, and clicking "OK." Repeat for each new address. Once you add all the addresses, then you will have finished creating your mailing list.

4. Any time you want to send an email to your list, bring up the Contacts panel, right-click on the folder you created, and select "Compose." All email addresses in the folder will automatically be listed in the "To" box of your email.

5. If you follow the instructions above, all the recipients of your email will be able to see everyone else's addresses in the "To" box. In some situations, you may want to hide the addresses. To do so, right-click on the folder you created, and select "Compose." (The addresses should be highlighted. If not, highlight them by double-clicking in the "To" box.) Then hit Ctrl-X. That will delete the addresses from the "To" box. Click within the Bcc box, and hit Ctrl-C. That will copy the addresses to the Bcc box. Then, put your own address in the "To" field. Recipients of the email will not be able to see any of the addresses in the Bcc box.

You can set up as many mailing lists as you want by creating a new folder for each list. You can edit existing lists at any time by adding or removing addresses.

Note: People often confuse Opera Web Mail with Opera Mail. Opera Web Mail is an internet-based service, similar to Yahoo Mail or Google Mail. Opera Mail (sometimes called "M2") is the email client built into the Opera web browser. The instructions here refer to Opera Mail, the client..
