Creating a marketing plan takes time, research and even more research. A marketing plan is like a living thing within your business, just like a business plan, as more often than not it will be changed, altered or even scrapped just like a business plan. BUT a Marketing plan/marketing strategy is essential if you want to have direction and focus for your business, and if you want to succeed.

A marketing strategy or a marketing plan should include information such as The businesses targets, goals, aims and objectives. It should include market research, ideally both primary and secondary, which should help you work out what your customers react and respond to and what they don't.
Here are some other things you Marketing strategy/plan should include (in no particular order):

1. The businesses strategies, how will you reach, meat and surpass goals, aims and targets set, how will you control your budget, timescales and so on.

2. Set and incorporate both short term and long term business goals into your Marketing strategy/plan. Setting overall business goals and including them within your Marketing plan will help you to maintain focus on your whole business and not just on the marketing side.

3. The businesses/companies values and mission statement. What does your business stand for, what is your vision, your philosophy and so on.

TOP TIP: Remember that if you want to build a brand, then it is essential to try and stay somewhat consistent when you are planning your marketing, for example try to stick to a slogan/something your remembered by, as this will help all of your marketing plans both in the short term and long term.

4. Conduct your market research, this should also include your competitor research which ideally should be both indirect competition and direct competition.

5. Work out and define what you want your marketing to achieve. For example do you want to increase brand awareness, increase sales or perhaps even target a new audience?

6. Work out and define what your product or service is. What is the main thing your business sells or is about. Who is your target audience and so on.

7. Work out your costs and timescales. Marketing can get costly and very expensive if you let it get out of hand, so take control of it from the start, work out a budget and stick to it.

Good luck and Remember that there is no set plan as to what you should or can put in your marketing strategy or marketing plan - just put in what you feel you require to help make your business a success.
