How to Create a New Menu in Joomla

You can create a menu in Joomla easier than you may think. When I first started using Joomla, it was very confusing to me. After I started using it on a daily basis it became very simple. So in this tutorial I will show you how to easily create a new menu in Joomla. You can add a menu to the top, sides, or bottom of your website.

Creating a New Menu in Joomla

The first thing you will need to do is login to your admin area. Click Administrator on your homepage, if you do not know how to login. Then you will be carried to the login screen. Type your login name and password in, and click the login button.

Now you will see your Control Panel interface. Go to the top of your Joomla window, and you will see File, Site, Menu, etc. Click on Menu. The Menu window will drop down and you will need to click on Menu Manager. Now you will see a list of menu that you already have on your site. If you wish to delete them, simply click the circle beside the menu and click delete.

Click the New button at the top right hand corner of your Joomla page. You will see Copy, Edit, Delete, New, and Help. Click on the New button. The next page that pops up is the menu details page. You will need to enter the name of your menu first. This is the name that Joomla will ID this menu with. Don't use any spaces in this name and make sure that it is a unique name. The next field is where you will enter the name of your menu that will appear on the menu. People who visit your site will see this name on the menu. Once you have filled out those two fields, click on the Save button in the top right hand corner.

You will be carried back to the Menu Manager page. You can edit the menu name by clicking on the name of the menu. Now you can start adding items to your menu by clicking Menu > whatever you named your menu. On the next page click the New button at the top right hand corner. Then you will be carried to another page where you will choose what type of menu item you want. I always use Link -- URL when I do menu items. So click Link -- URL and click the Next button at the top right of your Joomla window.

The next window is the details that Joomla needs to create the new item in the menu. Enter the name of your item in the first field. The next field calls for the link. I would just type in the name of the item in small letters with no spaces. The next field gives you the choice of opening the page in the same window or a new window. Choose which one you wish to use. The next field is already highlighted. Select if you want the public to see this menu or registered people to see this menu. Then check yes or no to publish. Next, click Save, to save your information.

The next page will show you the item that you just created. Continue repeating the steps above to create more items for your menu. Go to your homepage to see your new menu.

It is not common to see someone claiming his/her christianity as you do. It is encouraging. God bless you.

I appreciate any time taken to help us newbies, but the problem is always that "it's so easy" to anyone who knows it - but it ISN'T!

I've experienced this so much, with different advisors doing things their own way with advice to that effect, that I'm concerned that I'm going to break something if I blindly follow advice without the questions first, or do one bit one way and then another bit another.

For example, reading your article "How to create a new menu", you say... "I always use Link @ URL when creating new menus" with no further explanation. So why so many options in Joomla, and what am I going to have to re-do in future should I base all of my menus on such advice?

As I say, I really appreciate the time you've taken to produce such an article, but for anyone wanting to build an entire site from the ground-up, I'm guessing that it's necessary to understand a little more about what we're being instructed to do.

    Kind regards,

    Brendan.

Nope, still lost. Impossible to get a menu to go along the top of the site.
