How to Create a Nursery with a Beach Theme

Jonna Norris
Visions of the beach many times conjure up tranquility, serenity, and relaxation. With its calming colors and easy décor, this is the perfect theme for a do-it-yourself nursery. Here are some tips on how to create a nursery with a beach theme for your new little one.

Walls: A beach theme is all about the calming colors of nature, so work to bring these outdoor shades indoors. Think light blues, greens, and neutral sand colors when choosing a shade for your baby's nursery walls. The color of the ocean, the white tips of the waves, and the sandy beach should be your inspiration during this stage. If you wish, create a mural of a beach scene, with the ocean, sea shells, and sail boats. Paint any hanging shelving white, or leave it natural wood for a drift wood affect. If you're feeling creative, make your own shelf using a piece of drift wood as the bottom and attaching a board to the top.

Furniture: Extend the calming hues of the beach to your furniture. Choose a crib and dresser in white to keep with a clean pallet. Try Carter's Just One You crib in white. With curves that mimic the flow of the ocean, this convertible, 4-in-1 crib grows with your baby. Add the Storkcraft Aspen White Collection to round out your furniture needs. Consisting of a dresser, changing table, and armoire, this collection has beautiful graceful curves and provides much needed storage for your baby. Finish off by dressing a rocking chair in blue and white ticking.

Décor: Use common items to decorate with your beach theme. If you've spent vacations at the beach (or live near one), incorporate shells, sea glass and drift wood into your décor. Dress the shelves with sea shells of all shapes and sizes and add a classic wooden sail boat to the top of the dresser. Give a three dimensional affect to the walls by attaching sand dollars and starfish directly to the wall. Use a clear glass lamp base to showcase sand and shells. Use wooden oars as a stand-in for curtain rods.

These are just a few of the many ways to create a calm oasis for you and your little one. Since a lot of time will be spent there, use items you already have combined with a little creativity in order to make it a space filled with tranquility and serenity.
