How to Create a Nursery with a Cowboy Theme

Jonna Norris
If you're looking for a nursery that will grow with your little one, a cowboy theme may be just the thing you need. With décor that isn't especially baby-ish, a cowboy theme is appropriate from baby to toddler to preschooler. Common materials and traditional furniture make this a great DIY project to welcome your buckaroo home.

Walls: Apply a base of neutral paint on your walls. Soft brown or light blue (or pink for a cowgirl) will work well with the cowboy theme. Add a mural with a cowboy or cowgirl on a bronco. Add your child's name inside a large red or dark blue star, or create their name from rope. Hang shelves in natural wood or painted dark blue if that's the accent color you plan to use.

Décor: Accent your nursery with browns, blues and reds. Lean an old guitar in the corner, and hang cowboy hats, barn stars, and horse shoes (spray painted any color you wish) around the room to add to the cowboy theme. Place an old lantern on the shelf and add baskets or metal containers to the top of the dresser to corral baby supplies and toys. Use bandanas, bandana material, or plaid to cover a lamp shade, as well as for bedding, pillows, etc.

Furniture: For furniture, choose a crib with a dark brown or espresso finish. Children's Products Eclipse 4-in-1 convertible crib in black cherry by Delta is a great option. Converting to a toddler bed, daybed, or full size bed, it grows along with your baby. It has a stationary design that meets new safety standards for cribs (cribs with a drop down side are dangerous and should be avoided). Add bedding in dark blue or red, or combine these colors with dark brown. If you don't want bedding with actual cowboys on it, opt for classic plaid bedding. Or, look for bedding in an Americana theme, with red, white and blue accents. BeBe Chic Chesapeake 4-Piece Baby Crib Bedding Set has classic red stars and blue stripes. Use a wooden trunk for added storage. These are great for baby supplies, toys, or blankets and add a rustic feel to the room. Add a wooden rocking horse for fun.

These are just a few of the many options when it comes to a cowboy nursery. Using common materials, as well as items you may already have, allows you to make your buckaroo's room one of a kind.
