How to Create a Nursery with a Farm Theme

Jonna Norris
Have a new addition to the barnyard? For a theme that is cute and has potential to grow with your baby, try decking out your nursery with a farm theme. From bright colors to a serene farm scene, the possibilities are endless, and this theme won't break the bank.

Walls: Since a farm is all about the outdoors, paint the walls a light hue of blue to mimic the sky. Create a mural depicting a farm scene, adding a brightly colored barn with cows, sheep, pigs and chickens. For a more classical feel, paint a serene hillside with sheep or cows. Add trees and a barn in the background. Use old English or Irish farm scenery as inspiration.

Décor: Add toy tractors to shelves and the top of the dresser. Hang farm related accessories on the wall, such as a straw hat and horseshoes. Make or buy curtains or a valence in a bandana material. If you plan on doing a John Deere theme, accent the room in green. Hang John Deere signs on the wall or dress the floor with a John Deere area rug (or a rug in the signature green color). John Deere has even expanded its feminine side, so don't let that deter you if your farmer is a girl.

Furniture: If budget isn't a problem, add a vintage pedal tractor to anchor the room. Use a wagon to corral toys and baby necessities. If you are going for a bright nursery, focus on painted furniture, such as a white crib and painted dresser and shelving. This is great for a do-it-yourselfer, since old furniture can be repurposed and refreshed with a coat of paint. White furniture also does well with the classical farm look, as does espresso and dark cherry finishes. Dress a classical crib in Janie and Jack's Baby Lamb Bedding. It goes great with a classical farm theme and the pale green gingham and stripes work for both a boy and a girl. Brandee Danielle's On the Farm bedding is also a great choice. The quilt shows a farm scene, complete with barn, animals and a tractor. The soft yellows and greens make it appropriate for either sex. For a folk art look, try Kimberly Grant's Farm Yard. It depicts a light-hearted farm yard with animals in the folk art style. Remember that solid color crib sets will work just as well. Dress the crib in solid colors of blue and green, then add a whimsical mobile, such as The Little Farm Musical Mobile Set by Living Textiles Baby. Its colorful farm animals will brighten up any nursery, as well as your baby's spirits.

These are only a few of the many ideas for a farm nursery. Whether your farmer be a boy or a girl, common and inexpensive materials make the possibilities for a farm theme limited only by your imagination.
