How to Create an Online Course

Diana Eid
If you have specific knowledge or expertise that you would like to share with people, you should consider creating an online course. As well as educating others, you may even make a little money on the side in the process. Online courses are popular these days, in that many students like learning from the comfort of home. If you have enough knowledge and an interesting way to present it, try creating an online course to teach others about what you know.

First, brainstorm topic ideas that you would like to teach. If you are an expert in any given area, you may want to gather information such as books and notes in order to read about the way other authors have taught your subject area. Make sure the topic you use has enough information on it to create an online course.

Next, write an outline of the specific ideas that you want to teach. Make sure to put each thought down as you go along, even ones you may not use. This outline doesn't have to be long, just something basic to get everything down that you would like to cover in your online class.

Create a syllabus for the class. Putting down what you teach each week will not only help you keep on track, it will give your students time to plan ahead and study. Once you create the syllabus, you can work on writing content for each weekly lesson. Make sure to use engaging information that makes the student think about each week's lesson. Ask questions that require answers. Make the end of a lesson a teaser for the next week's information. You want to have interesting topics so that your students enjoy taking your online course.

Find a website to host your online class. There are many free sites out there but sometimes they are riddled with ads. If you are willing to spend a little, look into getting your own domain where you can control the amount of ads that are displayed. Learn how to put your content up on your site. Try getting a site that hosts forums and chats so that you can interact with your students.

Finally, market your class. No one can find your online course if they don't know it's out there. Post your site to message boards, blogs, other websites and any other place you think you might get traffic.

Be prepared to update your course information as you go along. Make constant changes especially if the links you use go outdated quickly. Constantly adding new information to your online course will keep it interesting and new.
