How to Create Your Own Pocket Garden

Putting up a garden brings many benefits. It can be a steady supply of fresh herbs, vegetables, and fruits. It can supply fresh oxygen, help de-stress tired souls, and even liven up the home.

However, a garden needs space. And space could be a problem for those who live in apartments, condominiums, and townhouses. On such cases, a pocket garden could be the best option. A pocket garden is an outdoor or indoor garden that could fit into a small area.

In creating your pocket garden, the first thing you have to consider is the location. The amount of sunlight in your chosen location will dictate what plants you should use. For example, ferns, bromeliads, and shrubs can live in shady areas, while herbs and flowering plants need lots of sunlight.

Another factor to consider in planning or creating your pocket garden is the theme. Decide whether you want a water theme, a tropical garden, a bonsai garden, or an herbs and flower garden. Stick to the theme you have chosen for your pocket garden.

Designate a focal point. For example, a big jar or a big shallow water container can add drama in an instant. You should group similar plants together, keeping in mind that taller plants should be placed in the background while the shorter plants should be placed in the foreground.

Morning is the best time to water the garden. Make sure your plants are hydrated enough to keep them moist for days. Put potted plants in a bucket of water up to the rim. Drain and return to the garden when all the bubbles have disappeared. This will not only ensure the proper hydration of your plants but can free you from the task of watering them everyday.

If you think you need to fertilize, use only a minimal amount of fertilizer. Do not put it near the roots. If you are recycling, it is best to use compost for your plants. Or you could also opt for a slow-release fertilizer that is released over a period of three months to keep your from over-fertilizing.

Think green! Create your own pocket garden!
