I first wanted to think of all the components I needed to have to create a successful writing space. I decided I wanted to make it simple since one of my goals is to make it portable. You first have to decide what medium you want to write on. I personally need a computer because I type much faster than I write. Some other things that are essential are a notepad to keep track of ideas because you don't want to forget everything you want to write about.
After thinking about all the base things I needed I realized I wanted something to relax with. I personally love bath salts. They really do make me relax. I have a collection but I did not know how to get the aroma without take a bath. I decided to try taking a 25 cent container and putting water in it as well as pouring some of the salts. It released the aroma and made the area fragrant as relaxing. You might want to try something else like candles or music. It really depends on the person.
Next things I had to do was to actually put together my writing area. I wanted something portable so I decided to invest in a roomy messenger bag. I invested in a new laptop nothing special because I am currently debating on whether switching to Mac. I decided to test run my "office" because I needed to know whether a laptop and bath salts were indeed enough. To my surprise I still needed a lot to make things successful.
These are the list of things I had to add:
*A index card holder that carries my day-to-day to do lists. (My Printable CEO article has more information)
*A mini envelope that I keep brainstorming papers in.
*A wireless portable printer. I use it to have hard copies of my articles.
*Pen and paper. I sometimes get tired of the computer screen.
*Noise cancelling earmuffs. It helps me keep concentrated.
With these things I decided to test my writing "office" one more time. This time I went to this noisy cafe. I had a goal to write two articles without stopping except for sipping my soda. It worked. Instead of taking out my bath salts I found a soothing alternative with the smell of coffee which was all over the cafe. I was able to write one whole article without getting up. I then had to get a refill. I did not hear much of what was going on because of the noise cancelling earmuffs. They work like a charm. I was able to get a one person table and enjoyed my experience
So far my portable writing space/office has worked for me. This approach should also work as an alternative to a home office if you are running your own business or telecommuting. Good luck! I hope you have as much success as I have.
