How to Create a Peaceful Homeschool Environment in Your Home

Creating a peaceful homeschool environment can mean the difference between homeschooling success and homeschooling failure. Turning your home into a place where children can learn effectively can be challenging, considering the fact that homes with children in them are often very busy and even chaotic. It can be difficult for children, and their teaching parents, to switch gears and settle down to a low stress learning period. This being the case, creating a peaceful homeschool environment is critically important for most homeschooling families. A peaceful homeschool environment allows children to feel relaxed and able to focus on the material they need to master. For those trying to create a peaceful homeschool environment, the following tips may be just what you need!

Don't do school work if anyone is upset or stressed out - To maintain a peaceful environment in your homeschool, it serves everyone involved best if school work is not forced at times when anyone is upset or stressed out over the work. If you recognize signs that your child is feeling overwhelmed over a project or assignment, try calming them, and then explaining that you will break it down into manageable bits. Forcing school work when a child is high strung, crying, or feeling inadequate will only be counterproductive. The goal here is to help them learn to tackle overwhelming situations in a calm, effective manner. So if there is a stress overload, give your kid a hug, and put the books away for a little while until the upset passes.

Incorporate as much exercise and outdoor time into your homeschool routine as possible - You may find that the best way for your family to maintain a peaceful homeschool environment is to be outdoors and active as much as possible. Maybe you can fit a morning walk into your schedule before starting school work, or head out to the park playground for an hour or more each afternoon. To maintain a peaceful homeschool environment, balance is key. So make sure some of your time is spent getting some fresh air and sunshine.

Incorporate soothing elements into your homeschool - In our homeschool, I burn lavender for several hours in a diffuser every morning in our school area of the house, and a CD of Native American pan flute music plays softly in the background as we work. These two elements have gone a long way in creating a peaceful homeschool environment for our family. Consider adding some similar relaxing elements to your daily routine.

Use common sense - A peaceful homeschool environment can be difficult to attain if everyone involved is not getting enough sleep or adequate nutrition. A huge benefit of homeschooling is that it gives parents the platform to nurture a child's body, soul, and mind at all times. You're working against yourself if you're not making sure to address the basics first.
