Furniture: What's an office without the proper furniture? A home office needs a desk, chair, and decent sized filing cabinet. The desk should be somewhere around 60 inches wide and 30 inches deep. This will give enough space to work as well as store a computer or personal laptop. The chair should be comfortable with a high back. The best chairs are those that promote good posture while working. If posture is good, workers will be mentally focused and this will also limit the amount of strain on the neck and back. Also, good posture will reduce the amount of strain in the shoulders and hands from typing. Determine whether or not clients will be coming to this office. If so, purchasing a table and a few chairs may be necessary. Also, adding a small sofa if the space is big enough might be considered. The table and chair are also a good idea becauase it can provide additional workspace for larger projects.
Storage: Figure out the items that will need to be stored in the home office in order to develop this space. Then it can be determined if storage space in a closet is good enough, or maybe installing shelving is a better idea. Closets seem to be the ideal space for storage as it leaves the workspace open and clean at all times. Filing cabinets can be stored in closets as well as any old boxed up files and supplies needed.
Organizers: In order to minimize clutter on the desk, dry erase boards, magnetic boards, and even cork boards are a good idea. They come in various sizes and are a great tool for eliminating clutter and staying organized.
Setup: If possible, choose a space that has ample window space. Natural daylight is extremely easy on eyes and will keep the mood peaceful in the office. Being able to look out the window every now and then promotes great energy as well as a positive attitude. The softer the lighting is, the better. Place the desk and chair in a place that allows viewing outside easily. Make sure the location has plenty of electrical outlets though as it will be necessary once setting up your printer and computer. Sometimes, a separate table for the printer and printing supplies helps keep clutter off the workspace as well. There, you will add your stapler, hole punch, binding machine etc if necessary.
Decoration: Do not overlook the setup and decoration of the home office. Awards, pictures, diplomas, and motivational items are a must in the home office. Definitely put things in your home office that remind you of your accomplishments and your family. The space should be calming, not intimidating.
Following these steps to creating a great workspace inside the home will result in focus, organization and great energy for working at home. Remember, an organized office will promote efficiency and creatvity!
