The most common problem that users have is remembering their password. Almost every site you shop on, belong to, or visit requires a password these days. It can be difficult to create a password that is both easy to remember and difficult for hackers to figure out.
A user will often use something that is very simple for them to remember such as a pet's name, their birth date, a simple number sequence, the state or city they live in, or even the name of their spouse or child. However, this is not the best route to take when creating a password because if a hacker gains access to your system, they could just read some of your personal information and guess what your passwords are. It is very similar to someone locking their door and then leaving their key underneath the doormat.
There are several rules you should follow when creating this important password. Number one is that you should never use personal information as part of the password. It may be easy to remember but it is also too easy for someone to guess.
You could try making up your own word instead. There are programs that hackers can use that can help them guess your password and with the computing power available today, a hacker can try every word in the dictionary and it might not take them very long. So it is best not to use a real word when creating your password.
Another thing that you could utilize is mixing different character types, which can make your password more secure. You could use both uppercase and lowercase letters, special characters like # or &, and numbers.
A great way to help ensure you have a secure password is to think of a phrase, song title, the title of your favorite movie or a saying and take the first letter of each word to construct your password. You could use a sentence from a work of literature or a quote that you like. One example of using a line from your favorite movie is taking a quote from "A Few Good Men" such as "You can't handle the truth" which as a password you could use "Ychtt". You could also then add numbers or special characters into this password to make it even more secure. You could also use the number 2 instead of the word "to". It would be wise to write down a couple different lines of special characters like $*@($. Then you just simply add one of these lines to the beginning, end or in the middle of your chosen password to make it even more secure.
You could further secure your login information by using different usernames and passwords at each site that you need to login to. This allows most of your logins to be safe if one of them becomes compromised. This is really the best advice you can follow because if someone gets your password for one site, they will not have it for every site you are required to log into.
Lastly, you should also change your passwords every 30 to 60 days and you should not reuse a password for at least a year.
