First you are going to need the most important aspect of the entire Sgt Pepper costume and that is the jacket. Without the jacket you will never achieve the look. So you will need a nice blue jacket with shoulder fringed epaulettes. The jacket will need to be long like in the sixties and the closures will need to be fringe accented. You can go one of two ways towards achieving the correct jacket look. The first choice is to do it all yourself. Find the perfect jacket and then head to a store like Joann's Fabrics or Wal Mart fabric department to buy the supplies to make it all from scratch. Some people are quite handy in this regard. Its not too hard to fashion epaulettes using virtually any craft material, you could even use curtain tie backs sewn on the shoulder and fashioned just perfect. You can also buy fringed pieces of edging on huge spools for next to nothing a yard which would work wonderfully.
Your second choice is simply to buy a costume jacket for the outfit. I will list retailers at the end of this email.
The next thing that you will need is black pants and black boots. These are fairly easy to come by. Just make sure the black pants are tight which is reminiscent of the era.
The last step will be to fashion your hair into a mop top. Can you do it with your current hair style? A bit of hair spray and a few ends tucked up here and there can easily create the bowl style hairdo. But maybe your hair is too short or you have lost too much of it and there is no way that you can use your real hair. If this is the case then you will want to go with a wig.
You will also need a mustache. These can be bought at the time you buy a wig or maybe you will want to start a week before the event and grow your own. Either way will work fine.
A pair of round glasses are a nice touch. You can pick these up at a drug store or even go to a thrift store and pop the lenses out.
Lastly you will need a guitar. Maybe you have your own? Maybe you could borrow a friends? You can even purchase a cheap one at a thrift store. Or you can go to a toy store like ToysRUs and buy a child's electric guitar that looks real but only costs under $20.00.
Here are some links that will help you achieve the look you want.
1) If you want to buy the jacket here are some links that sell this unique look. You can also consider renting one. There is a link listed here for rentals, too. Some of these costumes provide you with everything that you will need to achieve the look such as the jacket, pants, wig, mustache, and glasses but others are simply the jacket.
2) Here are several Halloween wig dealers that will sell the hair and mustache at a reasonable price.
All of these sites will aid you in your search for that perfect Sgt Pepper costume accessory.
No matter which route you decide to go, homemade or store bought, it will be a fun costume to don when Halloween night arrives.
