Decorating your kitchen can be very expensive, especially if you budget and strictly stick to that budget. Stools are commonly seen in the kitchen and there are all different types of stools that add to the look of your kitchen. The problem with great looking stools is that they are often a little pricey, and you often have to buy more than one. Instead of purchasing stools from a furniture store and putting a lot of your budget money towards them, purchase old stools from a second hand store or goodwill store and restore them to fit your kitchen.
Materials
-stool(s)
-paint
-paintbrush
-power sander
-fixative or varnish
Instructions
1. The first step to creating the perfect stool(s) for your kitchen is sanding it down. You have to do this before you start painting or the paint will not stick to the stool and will chip off very easily. Be careful when using the power sander, make sure you know how to handle it before using it on the stool. Sand the entire stool as evenly as you possibly can. Once you're down, wipe off the stool to get all the excess dust off.
2. Once your stool is sanded, you can start painting. The only requirement for picking paint is that the color matches your kitchen. It is not necessary to apply a base coat, but it is strongly advised, as it will most likely ensure the best results. Even if you apply a base coat, you will have to apply two coats of paint on the stool to make sure that there are no visible paintbrush streaks and spots that are lighter or darker than others. No matter how many layers you do, you will need to be sure that the paint on the previous coat is completely dry before applying another.
3. Once all the paint is dry, you can either leave your stool as is, or you can add some more details to it. You can give it any kind of finish that you would like, there are literally hundreds of options, you can make it look like granite, you can make it smooth, or rough, or anything you can possibly think of. You can also add pictures, or cutouts, or even food labels since it's a kitchen to your stool, just be sure you have enough for all the stools you want to make. They do not all have to look the same, but they do have to match.
4. When everything has been painted and the details have been added, it is time to apply the fixative or varnish. There are many different types and brands of these finishes, make sure that you pick one that is made for furniture. If you added things such as pictures it is best to pick one that is in liquid form rather than in a spray can, because it will also stop the pictures from moving out of place or ripping off later on.
This is not only a craft for kitchens, it can be used to create stools for bedrooms, bathrooms, game rooms, or any other type of room that a stool would be convenient in.
