How to Create a Pleasant and Productive Writing Workspace

Writing can be very challenging at times, especially if you don't have a practical space in which to do it. Of course, we don't all have in home offices, but that doesn't have to be a bad thing. Here, you'll find some easy ways to create a pleasant and productive writing workspace anywhere in your home.

1. Find a quiet and undisturbed place in your home to set up a desk or table. This can be in an out of the way corner, by a window, or any space that works in your home. Some writers have even transformed walk in closets into workspaces.

If you don't have a large closet and would like your workspace to feel a little more private consider purchasing a room divider. You can find them online, at furniture stores, and some department stores. The prices for these range from about $30.00 to $200.00.

2. After you've chosen an appropriate area, you want the atmosphere of the workspace to contribute to your creativity. The most important thing is to keep the area free of clutter. We all know how difficult it is to function and feel inspired when we're surrounded by a huge mess. It is also a good idea to not overload the area with photos and nic-nacs. However, you do want to have plenty of paper, pens or pencils, printer ink, a dictionary and a thesaurus on hand.

3. There is more than just efficiency required for a good writing workspace; you want it to be pleasant too. Scented candles and oils can be great in the space. Choose scents that are energizing and contribute to alertness such as, citrus or eucalyptus. Having a small plant in the area can help you feel calm and at peace while you write, and listening to classical music supports the flow of creativity.

4. For any workspace to be effective you need to take into consideration the time of day that you write. If you have young children at home, the best time to write, of course, is while they are asleep. This might mean getting up earlier than usual to get in some writing time, or staying up a little later. It is also a good idea for anyone who writes to pay attention to what time of day you feel the most alert; this is a great time to write.

5. If possible try to use your writing space only when you write. This will help you to get in the writing frame of mind; you'll know that when you are there, you are there to write.

As you can see, you don't need an office in your home to have a pleasant and productive place to write. All you need is a little creativity with the space you have.
