Voice:
Using a voice that just drones on and on is a sure fire way to put your audience to sleep. Try to keep your voice to that of what you would use when talking in normal conversation. If your message is a passionate one then do not be afraid to let your emotions be conveyed in your voice. Just avoid the popular droning monotone slide show presentation voice.
Bullets:
Bullets have a place in Power Point slide show presentations. The thing is though is that people get tired of seeing one bullet pointed slide after another. Try using some graphs in your presentation to show statistics and other numerical or percentage type of information that you may wish to present. This will help to break up those bullets and keep your audience interested.
Backgrounds:
Do not be afraid to use creative backgrounds that consist of textures or images. Just make sure that when using images that they are pertinent to your content. This will offer something beyond the boring white with black text or black with white text slides. Do not however use colors or background images that will distract your audience. When you get creative but professional with your Power Point slide shows you will be better able to keep your audiences attention. When you keep their attention, you get your message across to them.
Visual Aids:
Add images to your Power Point presentation to draw your audience in even more. If you are doing a presentation on cancer then use some images of patients in hospital settings. If your presentation is on the latest vehicle model that your company/team designed then add some images of this new vehicle model. Well you get the point I am sure.
Remember that when it comes to graphs, bullets and backgrounds and images that you should not over do it. Keep your background steady throughout the presentation. With everything else mix it up, pack a punch in your presentation and keep them wondering what is coming next. This will prevent them from falling asleep during your presentation.

Post a CommentGreat tips. Thanks for sharing.
You definately covered the important points! Death to boring slideshow presentations! :-)
Well written and interesting article...thx!
I like this article, especially the DO NOT OVERDO IT part at the end. I had an AP Economics teacher overload powerpoints with flashy bullets and shotgun noises... and well the result? no one paid attention and everyone had a headache!
You deserve a gold star if this keeps just one audience from being bored.
